There is nothing extraordinary about Tucker O’Shay’s dreams.
Go to college. Become president. Fall in love.
And pretend like he has enough time to get it all done.

Sixteen-year-old Sarah Miller doesn’t expect anything out of the ordinary when she begins her first day at the one-room-school house in her new hometown of Rocky Knob. But when she meets seventeen-year-old Tucker O’Shay—the boy with the fatal illness who volunteers to tutor her in algebra—she finds herself swept up in a friendship that changes the way she sees the world and a love that changes her life.

"I heard the cavalry when you sat beside me that first day." (55)  Yes, and I heard the cavalry with this book, This Quiet Sky by Joanne Bischoff. O, how heartbreakingly beautiful. How poignant yet sweet time is. How a message as simple as equations can leave such an impact. And how a short 149 pages novella can leave me with an ache, but still satisfied.

The relationship between Tucker and Sarah is one that lasts a lifetime. Even when tragedy strikes, the connection of their love continues on, leaving a legacy that "...isn't about all life...or all death...It's about living what you can live for. What God gives you the time to do." (130)  And it is such revelation and profound charm that makes This Quiet Sky a booming strength to be able to jump through the pages and into your soul. And be prepared to shed tears, to a point that it might be called "bawling", but at least it clears your sinuses, leaving you feeling good and hopeful. This is what kind of book This Quiet Sky is.

  1. You beautifully expressed my thoughts about this story, Annie. I loved Sarah in the first book of Joanne's Cadence of Grace series and am so glad she gave voice to Sarah's story. I struggled to write a review that would do justice to this moving story. Great job, Annie!
