Book Boyfriend Box Unboxing & Review: February 2017, "Out of This World"

Hi all! I know it's not the weekend, but there's something special about this box subscription that I won't want you to miss out. Which one is this? It's the Book Boyfriend box. I chose this subscription as one of Christmas wishlist since I heard such good things about the box and I'm thrilled to have received my first one this month! Like I said, February is a very special month indeed!

A little about the Book Boyfriend Box:

The Book Boyfriend Box is a bi-monthly book subscription service. According to their website
"Book Boyfriend Box is a bi-monthly curated subscription box delivering the best new YA books and fangirl feels right to your door. We love a good character-driven story with a swoon worthy cast and want to celebrate our favorites while meeting some new ones on the way. We also believe that book mail is the best mail, and strive to deliver that joy to you. Each box contains a hardcover copy of a recently released YA novel along with some other bookish goodies and presents!"
In each box, you will receive:
  • A recently released YA novel (usually hardcover)
  • An amazing book boyfriend in every book
  • 1-2 Premium bookish/fandom items
  • 1-5 Smaller bookish/fandom items
  • Exclusive author content when available

Cost?:
  • Base cost is $29.99 + Shipping ($11 to MD, USA). If you subscribe to the plans, it'll save you a little bit. A 6 months subscription is $83.99 (about $27.99 per box - remember you get a box every other month) and a 1 year subscription is $161.99 (about $26.99 per box), plus shipping per box.

Here's the February 2017 box themed, "Out of This World":

So this box is wider and thinner than most book box subscriptions I've received. I think in time it will change, once this company gets going, and have their own boxes. Currently, they stick their logo stickers on the box.  As we open the box, here's what it looks like:

Now, I check out the contents and read the info card. The card is pretty awesome with the vintage star chart on the other side (see top image) and info on the other side. You might want to blow it up to see the cuteness that went into this card, from words to designs.

First item, Out of Print "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" socks.  Subscribers either get this one or the "Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep Socks." Love socks in book boxes!! - Value: $10

Next, we have the "Daddy, I See the Moon" bath bomb from Fizzy Fairy Apothecary. It also comes with an incredible story. This bath bomb was inspired by a special young man and all the proceeds from this item are donated to the TS Alliance to help find a cure for tuberous sclerosis. I just love purchases that goes towards a good cause.  The scent is quite lovely, lavender with a gentle white musk, and some other notes in there.  Smells really good! (And on a side note, this is the first bath bomb I've received that is not all glittery!! Yay!)  Value: $5.50

And then we have the exclusive Lunar Chronicles magnetic bookmarks from Paperly and Co.  I think these are adorable, but unfortunately for me, I have no idea who I received since I have yet to read this series. It's on my 2017 must read list! So hopefully, by the end of the year, I'll know. Value: estimate $6

A signed copy of The Ascenders by C.L. Gaber and comes with a bookmark too! This indie book was first published in April of 2015. It's quite awesome that we get a second book in a book box, don't you agree? (Value for book: $11.99)

The cover's interesting...Here's the synopsis:

"Supernatural angst like you've never seen it before." MTV.com
Walker Callaghan doesn't know what happened to her. One minute she was living her teenage life in suburban Chicago...and the next minute, she was in a strange place and in a brand new school with absolutely no homework, no rules, and no consequences. Walker Callaghan, 17, is dead. She doesn't go to heaven or hell. She lands at The Academy, a middle realm where teenagers have one thing in common: They were the morning announcement at their high schools because they died young.
These high school kids are now caught in a strange “in-between” zone where life hasn’t changed very much. In fact, this special teen limbo looks a lot like life in a quaint Michigan town complete with jocks, popular girls and cliques. "There are even cheerleaders in death," Walker observes. It's not a coincidence that the music teacher is a guy named Kurt who "used to have this band." The drama teacher, Heath, is crush worthy because back in his life, he starred in some superhero movie.
Principal King explains the rules -- there are none. Why? You can't die twice.
There is no homework. No tests. No SATS. You're just there to learn because the human brain isn't fully formed until you're 24.
By the way, you can't get hurt physically, so race your Harley off that hillside. But falling in love is the most dangerous thing you can do ...because no one knows how long you'll stay in this realm or what's next.
"Losing someone you love would be like dying twice," Walker says.

Sounds kind of interesting, don't you think?

Next, I thought this was pretty cool. Book Boyfriend Box had a contest recently which was a short story competition. And the winner had their story printed and delivered in every box. Congratulations Alexandra Borkowski! What a great way to help promote and encourage new or aspiring authors! Value: Priceless.

And now, we have our book: Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth.

Fans of Star Wars and Divergent will revel in internationally bestselling author Veronica Roth’s stunning new science-fiction fantasy series.
On a planet where violence and vengeance rule, in a galaxy where some are favored by fate, everyone develops a currentgift, a unique power meant to shape the future. While most benefit from their currentgifts, Akos and Cyra do not—their gifts make them vulnerable to others’ control. Can they reclaim their gifts, their fates, and their lives, and reset the balance of power in this world?
Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power—something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.
Akos is from the peace-loving nation of Thuvhe, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Though protected by his unusual currentgift, once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get his brother out alive—no matter what the cost. When Akos is thrust into Cyra’s world, the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. They must decide to help each other to survive—or to destroy one another.

I'm kind of thrilled that this was included in this box. I wasn't sure if I wanted this book or not, but since it came in the box, I'm totally for it. Now I just need the time to read it! Value: $13.85 on Amazon

By the way, every month, some lucky subscribers will get bonus items. This month's bonus item is a Lunar Chronicles tote bag and a set of bookmarks inspired by Lunar Chronicles. How cool is that??!! Unfortunately, I was not one of the lucky few.

And this final piece in the box is what I'm so thrilled about, and letting y'all know ahead of time!
Next month's (April's) theme is:

And in EACH box, there is a:

How cool is that? They actually sold out when they first announced the theme mid February. Usually some subscriptions cancelled or skip the next month's and by the end of the month, subscription companies might have a few leftover to sell. So according to a recent email, Book Boyfriend Box have a limited number of the April Beauty and the Beast box available! If you want to purchase one, they have TWO options:

  • Everything in the box - $29.99 + shipping (subscription)
  • One time purchase of this box MINUS the Funko - $24.99 + shipping
This begins tomorrow, March 1, 2017 at 12:00 NOON MST

And that wraps up my first Book Boyfriend Box review and unboxing. What do you think? I'm pretty satisfied with everything. It does have two books, and the items are pretty cool. In comparison to other book boxes, this box doesn't include an author note, signature or bookplate. That's not a deal breaker at all. Just an observation. Total value is about $47.34 (with some estimates on my part and doesn't include the short story). That's still above the base charge of $29.99 + $11 shipping, even if it's just by a few bucks.    I don't have a referral link on this, but hopefully in the future. If you want to grab the Beauty and the Beast box, set your alarms!
