Book Review: His Steadfast Love by Julie Lessman, Book 3 of Isle of Hope series

"The winds of change are blowing . . . and it's a category five."

Title:  His Steadfast Love
Series: Isle of Hope, Book 3
Author: Julie Lessman
Publisher: Julie Lessman, LLC
Release Date: August 1, 2017

She’s bent on fun.
He’s bent on faith.
Till true love bridges the gap.

Cat O’Bryen is the prodigal daughter unhappy with God. First, the father with whom she reconciled dies of cancer and now her twin sister and best friend marries, leaving Cat at home with a newlywed mother, her new husband, and a little brother. But when Cat moves in with a roommate of questionable morals, her family is worried, certain she’s on a path that could damage her faith forever.

Reluctant to get involved with a woman like the one who destroyed his life, ex-Navy SEAL Pastor Chase Griffin steers clear of the attraction he feels for Cat O’Bryen. Until her family begs him to take her under his wing, hoping he can draw her back into the fold. But when the draw she has on him proves too strong to resist, he must rely on the strength of God to offer a friendship as steady and strong as the God whose love is wooing her home.

A category five is sure to hit you when you pick up the third installment of the Isle of Hope series by Julie Lessman. Easily read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the whole series, as each have its own purpose and road trip for readers to venture on, His Steadfast Love takes you on this emotional journey that rivals any storm system. Delightful is just the least of what you can say about Cat, our main girl in the story that just as Chase (the main guy and resident pastor) says, fascinates us. She has this naivete that doesn't go with her smart mouth and tough girl exterior, yet it's that simplicity in seeking love that drives readers to relate to her.

"Dropping to the bed, she collapsed on her pillow in a broken sob, certain that no man would ever stay and love her like she craved. Nor even a God."

How many times have we've considered that God can not love a girl like us? How many times have our own thoughts of who we are or what we do, and sometimes in comparison to others that hinders us from believing that the simplest of love was free? No strings attached. And what about what's deep in our hearts?

". . . hate and unforgiveness - or any sin - are nothing more than iron bars trapping me into a  life of misery and hurt.  A prison of my own making . . . where true joy and peace are always just out of reach."

Julie Lessman have the power to hit readers at the core of what makes our heart aches, what bitterness have taken root and what love we crave. His Steadfast Love is about love, as much as it is about the personal prison the characters have put themselves in, as well as the hope that spurs. As jealousy plays a role, the need for acceptance and self-confidence makes a strong presence, not only in terms of romance, but also one's assurance in life.

"The monster of jealousy took over my soul. . . blackening my heart. . . "

The lives of the characters from book 1 through to this current one, have allowed readers to see the mistakes, the hurts, the constant struggle from it all, as well as what brings couples and families together - the steadfast love and the hope from the One above.  For fans of the author's take on clean romance and passion, you won't be disappointed. There are plenty of passion around, but I think it's the quiet passion of what goes on behind the surface that spoke loud in His Steadfast Love

"And in the space of one shuddering heave, he suddenly realized it didn't matter. His eyes drifted closed. Because Cat mattered more."

"Because a change in one's life began with a change in thinking. Hope flickered like the smile on his lips."

I close each of Julie Lessman's stories with newfound admiration as to how she can read us so well. Even when experiences between characters and myself are far apart, yet the emotional journey still binds us together. There was no taking back when you read one of the author's book, and His Steadfast Love will be like no other. Are you willing to risk it?

". . . God has shown me that sometimes love isn't safe, but if He's involved, it's always worth the risk."
