ABOUT THE BOOK

In early-nineteenth century Scotland, sixteen-year-old Josie, an orphan, is sent to live with an aunt and uncle on the rocky, stormy northwest coast. Everything and everyone in her new surroundings, including her relatives, is sinister, threatening, and mysterious. She's told that Eli, the young man she's attracted to, is forbidden to her, but not why. Spirited, curious, and determined, Josie sets out to learn the village's secrets and discovers evil, fueled by heartless greed, as well as a ghostly presence eager for revenge. An author's note gives the historical inspiration for this story.

MY THOUGHTS

The mystery of Forbidden starts from the very first page. What does Josie see through the carriage window as she's driven towards Brindle from her home town of Edinburgh? The gloomy overcast skies doesn't do well to boost her mood, and it sets this Gothic tone of mystery throughout the novel.
I find Josie a character that one can sympathize and her questions are our questions. She's the character in the book that are in sync with the readers. We're seeing things from her perspective and what she doesn't know, also transfers back to us. The mystery of the villagers, her uncle and aunt, and even Eli is what she attempts to figure out. And the outcome is worst than what she had initially imagined.

The riveting mystery of who Eli is and why is he "forbidden" already had me itching to find out, and then the mysterious Lamb, and the weird actions of the villagers had me go in different tangents. So with that said, an absorbing story on evil and what it takes to combat.  Dark and mysterious, check out Forbidden and seek answers along with Josie.
