Book of the Month May 2016 Unboxing Reveal + Coupon

NOTE: Even though I purchased this subscription myself, this post may have referral or affiliate links. Thank you.

A little about Book of the Month:

Book of the Month (BOTM) is a subscription service in which on the 1st of every month, they announce 5 selections by their guest curators. By the 6th of each month, you select the one you want and they'll ship it out on the 7th. You are also allowed to select up to 2 books for the additional price of $9.99 each. Each book also comes with a note from the corresponding curators.

For my first month with Book of the Month, I've selected 2 books from their list of 5.  It arrived in a simple brown box with its logo on the front, along with a simple print of their website on the side. And depending on the number of books you've selected, I'm sure the box size will accommodate. The one I received was perfect for the 2 books plus the little something extra.

I must say I am thoroughly impressed with their packaging. The box is the perfect fit, and for each book, they shrink wrapped the book, along with a note from the guest curator to a cardboard that is slightly bigger than the book, giving the book great protection. The note from the guest curator is printed on thick card stock - simple - pretty - perfect.

For this specific box, it came with a Ring Pop, which I guess have a little to do with the book I selected (but every subscriber will get one, even if you did not choose the relevant book).

So, without further delay, here are my choices for this month:

SELECTION #1:  I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh
PUBLISHER:  Berkley

Guest Judge:  Liberty Hardy

This is what she had to say about I Let You Go:
"An emotional roller-coaster ride, with reveal after stunning reveal that will shock and dazzle you with its cleverness all the way up to the explosive finale." - Liberty Hardy

WHY I CHOSE THIS:  This one I'm definitely looking forward to. It sounds so intense!

FIRST IMPRESSION of THIS BOOK: Pretty cover, hardback, pages does seem a little on the thin side (have to be careful not to rip it) and the BOTM printed on the cover was a tad bit unpleasant for me, but at least it blends with the cover.

SELECTION #2:  Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld
(A modern retelling of Pride & Prejudice)

PUBLISHER:  Random House

Guest Judge:  Nina Sankovitch

This is what she had to say about Eligible:
"Sittenfeld offers a marvelous lesson about relationships: channeling Jane - the author, not the character - we can have it all: lust, love, friendship, and even a lasting détente with our families, to say nothing of our in-laws. And the "Elizabeth or Jane" test holds up perfectly for this modern adaptation."  - Nina Sankovitch

WHY I CHOSE THIS:  For this Pride & Prejudice fan, need I say more?

FIRST IMPRESSION of THIS BOOK: Also pretty cover in hardback. But I didn't expect such a thick book, 492 pages including the acknowledgements!  Again, the BOTM logo, very obvious once I took more time inspecting the book.  As you can see my excitement with the book, along with the ring pop, I had to whip out one of my favorite Pride & Prejudice quote cards.

"You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." - Pride & Prejudice, Jane Austen

OVERALL: Great first impression! Excited about both these books (I might need to carve out some time to read these ASAP!)

It also came with a BOTM bookmark with a Jane Austen quote. This is going in my "to-keep" pile!

The only negative I might say is the BOTM emblem printed not only on the cover, but the spine also (see image above).  For this bibliophile, collecting books and pretty books at that, makes the BOTM edition not something I care for.  I wonder why they started this? I've read on discussions that it only started in the April box.

Anyhow, I think BOTM is a great monthly subscription for book lovers, giving you selections curated by others.  Something to look forward to. And if you don't like this months, you can always skip.
