I jumped at the chance to join The Rise Tour in preparation for the release of the final book in the Out of Time Series trilogy by Nadine Brandes. Starting with A Time to Die, it was a book I've heard much about from fellow bloggers and was definitely intrigued since the first time I met the author, Nadine at a Facebook Party. Her enthusiasm coupled with her thoughts about her own book had me anticipate the time I would get my hands on A Time to Die. As time comes and goes, Book 1 had found its place in my kindle, but my schedule did not give me much reminder to pursue it. Then comes The Rise Tour! O yes!
Did you know that the Out of Time Series is a Christian dystopian young adult fiction series? I think the genre itself fascinated me from the get go. When it comes to dystopian, what do you think of? Hunger Games, perhaps? Though in many ways, A Time to Die reminds me of The Hunger Games, with a heroine that you can love and also be annoyed with at times. A heroine that not only fights for others, but she did it without knowing so. With Parvin, she searches the meaning behind her last year of life, according to her "clock." And that makes it different. Katniss (THG) didn't seek it out, it was almost like it was handed to her. Parvin asked God for adventure, for purpose and to find shalom.
"Shalom - Wholeness and completeness in God, the way things were intended to be." (113)
A Time to Die did not disappoint in giving readers an intense plot that leads to the profound depth one encounters in books of the Christian genre. Personalities that reflects the true nature of humanity, from questions, to mistakes, to strength, courage and even evil tendencies, were well represented. Nadine's astuteness in providing a main heroine that is not perfect, and in fact full of flaws relates to readers on a more personal level. The many twists surprised even me, a seasoned reader. The action, especially when things are coming together, when you think it's going to be a certain way, you encountered the heartfelt changes alongside Parvin. Ahhh, the many life's questions, the many "whys" and "hows" we ask God, comes away inspired and even encouraged. That is A Time to Die.
"'He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion"
