Title: Control Girl: Lessons on Surrendering Your Burden of Control from Seven Women in the Bible
Author:   Shannon Popkin
Publisher:  Kregel Publications
Release Date:  January 27, 2017
Genre: Inspirational Devotional

Tension, anger, fear, anxiety-it all begins with a heart that craves control.

Little fights with your husband and kids. Unhappiness when things don't match your version of perfect. When your perspective of how life should go replaces God's, you doom your quest for security, peace, and joy before it even starts.

Thankfully, there is a better way.

Join Shannon as she shares what she has discovered about her own control struggles and about God from studying seven Control Girls in the Bible. Whether it was Eve's desire to know instead of trust, Sarah's inability to wait for God to move, or Rebekah's controlling hand on her family's future, each of these women's stories contain warnings and lessons for us today.

Learn how you too can lay down this burden of trying to control everything and find rest in surrendering to the One who truly is in control.

O, this book! Control Girl: Lessons on Surrendering Your Burden of Control...by Shannon Popkin really hits you! I mean, how many times have I gone through this book and realize (with a thump and a stop in your heart) that the author could be talking about me?!  With nine chapters and between three and five lessons each, readers are presented with personal thoughts, biblical depth and insightful discussions, as well as areas of reflection and meditation.  Control Girl gave me much to think about, from my words to my actions.

This section. Can you imagine, us hijacking God's story for us?  And when you think  about it, when you reflect upon it, isn't that what we do from time to time? We try to control how things will be, how we WANT it to be and go about trying to make it as we want. Surrender. That's the word.

There are still so much I want to go back and reflect on with Control Girl, especially the biblical verses in the meditation section at the end of each lesson. The author's writing is easy to read and follow, and the format straightforward.  It would be a great personal devotional as well as a small group study.  What better way to share and discuss than with your close sisters in Christ?   I highly recommend this book, and if you have time to peruse the author's website. There are plenty of resources, including a meditation sample pack with cards to print as those above. Transformation is not easy, but as the author says in Control Girl, the small steps and the small moments. Let's start there, together.

"As a Control Girl, words are the primary way I try to control people.  But as a Jesus Girl, words are the primary way I give up control to God. Taming my tongue starts by yielding my heart in the small moments of the day."(195)
