With Danger Creeping Ever Closer,
Do Their Dreams Still Matter?

Once London's top thief, Barclay Pearce has turned his back on his life of crime and now uses his skills for a nation at war, including keeping an eye on a talented engineer working as a clockmaker. But not until he rescues the man's daughter from a mugging does he begin to wonder what his future might hold.

Evelina Manning has constantly dreamed and worked for independence, but she certainly never meant for it to inspire her fiancé to end their engagement and enlist in the army. When the intriguing man who saved her returns to the Manning residence to study clock repair with her father, she can't help being interested. But she soon learns that nothing with Barclay Pearce is as simple as it seems.

As 1915 England plunges deeper into war, the race is on for any technological edge, and Evelina's father's ideas have captured the attention of many--perhaps too many. As danger seems to encroach from every side, it may just take a reformed thief to steal the time they need to escape.

MY THOUGHTS

I've been anxiously awaiting Barclay Pearce's story since A Name Unknown, the first book in the Shadows Over England series by Roseanna M. White.  As the third and final book in the series, An Hour Unspent is worth the wait.

Barclay will give Peter from A Name Unknown a run for his money as my favorite character in the series, but it was his journey, his disbelief, to his questions, his actions and to his faith that had me swooning. As head of a family of street orphans, it was interesting to see the change in him. Once we add in Evelina, it gave way to quite a complexity in plot, yet allowing us, readers to really be entertained and enthralled for both her and Barclay. The truth of the matter is that her story complements so well with Barclay's, creating contrast where due, but also the representing parallel symmetry and balance of love and choice.

"Love. The thing worth fighting for. Worth fighting for. But more - worth living for." (401)

To be honest, I'm a bit impartial to the author's stories ever since her Ladies of the Manor series, with difficulty in choosing a favorite. However, only after reading An Hour Unspent, am I really considering this may very well be my favorite. I loved every one of the books in this series, due to the underlying theme throughout that I can fully relate to.  However,  in An Hour Unspent, it perfectly balanced romance, humor and suspense with a message of faith that threaded through.  Take your time and savor An Hour Unspent. Maybe even asked Barclay to "steal an hour for you!" *wink wink.
